LAFC sign Lewis O’Brien on loan from Nottingham Forest

LAFC have signed Lewis O’Brien on loan from Nottingham Forest with an option to make the deal permanent.

The 25-year-old midfielder joins the Major League Soccer (MLS) club on an initial loan until December and will take up one of their international roster slots.

O’Brien previously had a spell in MLS with D.C. United during the 2022-23 season.

LAFC acquired O’Brien’s right of first refusal from D.C. United in exchange for $50,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM).

He joined Forest from Huddersfield in a £10million ($12.8m) joint deal with Harry Toffolo in July 2022 and made 17 appearances in all competitions for the Premier League club.

O’Brien’s minutes were gradually restricted during his debut season at Forest and he was due to move on loan to Championship side Blackburn Rovers in January 2023, only for the deal to fall through due to a paperwork issue.

He subsequently joined D.C. United on loan in March and made 17 MLS appearances, providing one goal and one assist.

O’Brien spent last season on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough. He made 25 appearances in all competitions, having missed three months of action after suffering a fractured tibia and ankle damage in September.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Lewis to Los Angeles,” LAFC co-President and general manager John Thorrington said. “He is a dynamic, versatile midfielder with qualities we know will complement an already strong group of midfielders and will help in our pursuit of trophies. I would also like to thank Nottingham Forest and his representative, Kevin Sharp, for their professionalism throughout the process.”

LAFC sit second in MLS 24 games into the regular season, two points behind LA Galaxy but with two games in hand.
