Gio Reyna, a notorious member of the US team, has blasted coach Gregg Berhalter and his teammates after learning that he was just one player vote away from being cut from the World Cup roster.
It was puzzling why the 20-year-old Dortmund player saw no action in Qatar during the competition.
Reyna’s father Claudio was a boyhood friend and US teammate, and coach Gregg Berhalter reported that Reyna had a minor muscle ailment.
Reyna publicly denied being hurt and made suggestions that he and the coach had other unresolved concerns.
Reyna’s teammates apparently conducted a vote to decide whether or not to send him home because of his behavior and « alarming lack of effort » at the team camp in Doha.
Gio Reyna not keeping quiet about the matter
Reyna retaliated by claiming his attitude was caused by Berhalter telling him before the tournament that he would play a supporting role, and he claimed teammates and the coach were lying.
Reyna wrote on Instagram, « I hoped not to comment on matters at the World Cup. It is my belief that things that happen in a team setting ought to remain private. »
« That being said, statements have been made that reflect on my professionalism and character, so I feel the need to make a brief statement. »
« Just before the World Cup, Coach Berhalter told me that my role at the tournament would be very limited, » Reyna added.
« I was devastated. I am someone who plays with pride and passion. Soccer is my life, and I believe in my abilities. «
« I fully expected and desperately wanted to contribute to the play of a talented group as we tried to make a statement at the World Cup. »
Reyna was accused of « walking around throughout the game » during a pre-tournament warm-up match against Qatari team Al Gharafa, which is when his behavior started to generate issues.
