More than four years after playing his last soccer game with the Las Vegas Lights, the man who was one of the key figures in making soccer more popular in American culture, Freddy Adu, says he is ready to return.
In an interview with sportbible.com, Adu says he still has another chapter to write. « Technically, I haven’t retired yet. I took a few years off after losing my love for soccer. Believe it or not, I’m thinking about getting back out there and playing. I’m still young enough. »
Wants to get back on the field at age 33
Adu is 33 years old, and he still considers himself young enough to return to a good level on a soccer field. He played with 15 teams in 17 years, and now that he is dedicated to taking care of his mother, he says he has the desire and the strength to return.
Not for nothing was he the highest paid player in MLS at the age of 14 and was labeled by Phil Knight, the president of Nike, as someone with the ability to achieve more than Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and LeBron James.
Even Pele had great words for him: « God gave Freddy the gift of playing soccer. If he is mentally and physically prepared, no one will stop him. »
Falling back in love with the sport that gave him everything
Adu looks back and doesn’t think twice about what he’s experienced. « Some people are going to say that I didn’t live up to my potential. But I ask, by whose standards?« .
« I had my own standards, my own dream. If I’m disappointed that I didn’t live up to my own standards, that’s fine. But right now I’m not trying to live up to anyone’s standards. For me, just the fact that I was able to be a part of the history of soccer in this country, and help elevate the sport, is incredible. I will always be proud of that. »
And he insists he can continue playing: « When you lose your love for soccer, it’s very difficult to continue. But I’ve got it back. I think I can play again, I haven’t finished my soccer career. I’m ready, » he concluded.
