All signs pointed to a whole host of world-class players landing in MLS in June 2023. Players who, despite being at an advanced age, still have a lot of football left in them.
We are talking about names like Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, Luis Suarez, but it looks like, in the end, none of them will land in North America.
The Uruguayan will play for Gremio, Shakira‘s ex retired from football, Messi will renew his contract with PSG and Sergio Busquets is considering staying with the only club he’s ever known.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Barcelona midfielder has completely changed his intentions.
A few months ago he was determined to leave the Blaugrana and head to the United States, but now it seems that everything has changed, and the reasons are twofold.
Xavi Hernandez and Messi the reasons behind his decision
The first has to do with his coach, Xavi Hernandez, who, after a long conversation, looks to have convinced him to renew his contract for at least one more year.
The club’s economic situation isn’t great, and the coach knows they won’t find anyone in his position in the short term.
That is why Xavi has repeatedly underlined his full confidence in Busquets‘ abilities, and how it would be doing him a great favor if he stays for one more season.
The second reason is Messi‘s likely renewal with PSG. Busquets thought that he would join up with Messi, who is a great friend of his, at Inter Miami.
But the Argentine’s decision to remain in France would leave the Catalan alone in Miami, giving him another reason to postpone his departure for MLS.
Nothing is confirmed yet and there is still a long season to go, but right now, Busquets is closer to staying in Barcelona than going to MLS.
