Mbappe penalty not enough as Paris Saint-Germain blow late lead against Lille

PSG’s control of the ball but few good chances cost them in a 1-1 draw agasint Lille that saw them concede in the 95th minute after Kylian Mbappe’s 67th minute penalty, although they remain top of Ligue 1 by five points.

PSG started the game busily, limiting the home side to two shots in the opening 45 minutes, but lacked clear-cut, good chances to put the game beyond Lille in the north of France.

Despite possessing 66% of the ball, PSG struggled to make Lucas Chevalier work as he only had to make the one save in the first half of the contest, so Lille no doubt felt more confident as they came out for the second half level. They recorded five shots in 12 minutes whilst PSG didn’t manage a single one in that period.

However, their hard work was thrown out of the window thanks to a bizarre challenge on Lucas Hernandez by Bafode Diakite. Up stepped Mbappe to fire the ball into the top corner of the left side of the goal.

PSG only managed an expected goals of 0.92 from nine efforts in the game, without the penalty worth 0.71, which cost them when Lille came on strong in the finale.

Lille notched up 10 second half shots to PSG’s four as they sensed the Parisians lacked true threat and whilst the league leaders did well to try to ride it out, they couldn’t withstand the onslaught forever.

Jonathan David equalized in the 94th minute with a close range header after an unconvincing save by Arnau Tenas that saw the Spanish goalkeeper only parry the ball into the air, with the Canadian forward on hand to head home and send the Decathlon Arena into delirium.

Impact on Ligue 1

Following the result, PSG lead the way by five points from Nice. The defending champions have 37 points on the board from 11 wins, four draws and one defeat in 16 games.

Lille, meanwhile, moved up to fourth place and now occupy a Champions League play-offs spot. They leapfrogged Brest and now sit nine points off the top of the table.
