Valencia’s La Liga match against Real Madrid on Saturday is set to be postponed as a result of flash flooding and extreme weather conditions in the region.
La Liga has requested that the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) reschedule the fixture for a later date, along with Villarreal’s clash with Rayo Vallecano.
Local Valencian government officials said on Wednesday evening that 92 people have been killed in flash floods caused by torrential rain in the eastern region of the province, while many more remained missing.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced the postponement of Copa del Rey match between Valencia against Parla Escuela, which was due to take place in Parla, just 15 miles from Madrid.
Valencia is under a red alert weather warning through much of the state. A red warning precedes extreme or unusual weather events and is the departments most extreme alert. Yellow warnings, which indicate lower-risk weather, are also in place across other parts of Spain.
Valencia’s Mestalla stadium has been made available as an emergency aid station for volunteers collecting food and essential items for victims of the flooding.
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric sent well wishes to those affected by the weather conditions, saying on Wednesday: “Lots of love and strength to all the people of Valencia and the other provinces affected by the storm.”
Valencia are bottom of La Liga having taken just one win from their opening 11 games this season, while Real Madrid are second — six points behind league leaders Barcelona.
