Lucas Vazquez to sign Real Madrid contract extension

Lucas Vazquez is set to sign a one-year contract extension at Real Madrid.

The 33-year-old’s existing deal expired at the end of June, but confirmation that he has committed his immediate future to Madrid until 2025 is expected imminently.

Vazquez made 38 appearances in all competitions for Madrid last season as the club won La Liga and the Champions League, making a late substitute cameo in the Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund.

The versatile right-back, who has also played as a right-winger, was largely utilised as an understudy to Dani Carvajal during the first half of the season but became a more central figure in the second half, turning in a particularly impressive performance during April’s Clasico victory over Barcelona.

Vazquez progressed through Madrid’s academy and, bar a season on loan at Espanyol in 2014-15, has spent his entire senior career in the Spanish capital. He has tended to renew his contract on a yearly basis in recent seasons.

Vazquez would become the latest Madrid player to extend his contract at the club after Luka Modric’s new one-year deal was confirmed on Thursday.

Fellow long-serving players Nacho and Toni Kroos have departed this summer, with the former joining Al-Qadsiah and the latter retiring.

Madrid begin the defence of their La Liga title against Mallorca on August 18.
