Barcelona central defender Pau Cubarsi has signed a contract extension through to 2027.

Cubarsi, 17, has enjoyed a breakthrough season at the Catalan club — making 20 first-team appearances having come through the ranks of their La Masia youth system.

The central defender’s new contract will include a €500million release clause (£430.6m; $538.9m at current rates).

The teenager, who has been capped twice by Spain at international level, has signed a one-year extension to his previous deal with the new contract also granting him first-team status.

The defender’s previous deal had been an academy contract that included a €10m release clause — a standard figure among the club’s youth-team players.

The deal has been signed through to 2027. According to Spanish law, a player under the age of 18 cannot sign a longer contract. Cubarsi will turn 18 in January 2025.

It is believed that Cubarsi’s deal is similar to the three-year contract handed to Lamine Yamal in October, which raised the 16-year-old forward’s release clause to €1billion.

Catalan-born defender Cubarsi is a lifelong supporter of Barcelona and the club were confident of him committing his long-term future to the club.

As reported by The Athletic, Manchester City had previously shown an interest in signing the defender but his connection to Barcelona and the pathway to the first-team squad have led to him agreeing a contract extension at the club.
