Barcelona head coach Xavi says he feels “very bad” for Dani Alves after the Brazilian was provisionally jailed with no bail after being detained on suspicion of sexual assault.
Alves, 39, allegedly assaulted a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona on December 30.
The former Barcelona full-back allegedly inappropriately touched the woman. Alves has denied the allegation.
When asked about Alves, who he coached last year and previously played with at Barcelona, Xavi said on Saturday: “It’s difficult to comment on a situation like this. I am surprised, shocked, in a state of shock.
“It’s a question of justice. Justice will rule whatever it is. I feel very bad for Dani. I’m in a state of shock about how he is with us.”
Alves was taken into custody on Friday before the court in Barcelona decided to jail him with no bail.
Mexican side Pumas UNAM have terminated his contract. He played 408 times for Barcelona, winning La Liga six times and the Champions League three times. Alves was also part of Brazil’s World Cup squad.
