Atletico Madrid are in advanced talks to sign Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra.
An agreement in principle for a fee in the region of €25million (£21.4m) plus add-ons has been reached with Valencia holding a sell-on clause of around 15 per cent.
Guerra’s previous club Villarreal are set to receive 30 per cent of any transfer fee should the move progress.
The 21-year-old did not train with Valencia on Tuesday ahead of an anticipated move. An agreement on personal terms with a long-term contract is not expected to be an issue.
It remains to be seen what impact the potential Guerra transfer has on the ongoing pursuit of Conor Gallagher from Chelsea.
The England midfielder is expected to finalise a move to Atletico in the coming days, having rejected three contract offers from Chelsea, although personal terms are yet to be agreed.
Atletico sources, not authorised to speak publicly on the matter, have not guaranteed that both signings will be made, leaving open the possibility that either could still fall through.
Girona and Real Sociedad have also shown interest in signing Guerra this summer.
Atletico begin their 2024-25 La Liga campaign against Villarreal on August 19.
