Manchester United beat Real Sociedad 1-0 in the Europa League but fell one goal short of overtaking the Spanish side for first place in Group E.
United entered the night knowing a two-goal win would be necessary to win their group, and they appeared to be heading for that result early on. Teenager Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring for Erik ten Hag’s side with an impressive goal in the 17th minute, his first senior goal for the club.
But as the game continued, Real Sociedad looked every bit as likely to score as their visitors, refusing to sit deep and park the bus.
With United unable to get their second goal, they’ll have to navigate a two-leg play-off tie in February against a team dropping down from the Champions League in order to reach the last 16 of the Europa League.
