Claudio Ranieri has been appointed as the new head coach of Roma.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that Ranieri was in talks to take over at the Serie A side, having previously announced his retirement from coaching after steering Cagliari to safety at the end of last season.

Roma say that at the end of this season, Ranieri will “transition into a senior executive role, where he will be an adviser to the ownership on all sporting matters at the club”.

The club add that the search for their head coach will proceed over the coming months and Ranieri will be involved in the decision on his successor.

This will be Ranieri’s third spell in charge of his hometown club. The 73-year-old managed them between 2009 and 2011, guiding them to a second-place finish in the 2009-10 season, and again for two months at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

Roma had been in need of a new coach after sacking Ivan Juric following their 3-2 defeat by Bologna on Sunday. Juric had only joined Roma in September after former captain Daniele De Rossi was sacked after failing to win any of the opening four Serie A matches.

The Bologna loss saw Roma head into the international break in 12th place, having won only three of their opening 12 league games. They have also struggled in Europe, winning once, drawing twice and losing twice in the Europa League.

Ranieri’s coaching career began in 1986 and has seen him take charge of clubs in Italy, England and Spain, as well as coaching the Greece national team. The Italian is perhaps best known for his Premier League title win with Leicester City in the 2015-16 season.
