Alexis Mac Allister injury ‘more tricky’ than first thought, doubt for Liverpool vs Manchester United

Alexis Mac Allister remains a doubt for Liverpool’s game with Manchester United at the weekend as Jurgen Klopp confirmed his knee injury was “more tricky” than first imagined, but not serious.

The midfielder posted pictures on crutches and wearing a leg brace after needing stitches following a challenge from Vinicius Souza at Sheffield United last week.

That sparked fears that he may be out for a longer period but Klopp said: “I would like to say it’s day to day, but we have to wait until Macca can deal with the pain.

“It’s a bit more tricky than we thought in the first moment. The studs went through the muscle and to the bone. It’s painful for him and we need to make sure there’s no infection.

“I’ve never had this injury in one of my players before but hopefully in the next three or four days he makes big steps.”

Mac Allister missed the 2-1 win at Crystal Palace and has not travelled with the team for the Europa League game with Union Saint Gilloise.

Klopp is also unable to put an exact timeframe on the return and will instead turn to other options in the squad for cover.

Liverpool are preparing for Thursday’s game in Belgium with a mix of youth and experience having already qualified for the last-16 as group winners.

Some of the big-hitters — Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah — have all been left at home and will get a welcomed break ahead of the crunch clash with Manchester United on Sunday.

Youngsters Luke Chambers, Calum Scanlon, Conor Bradley, Kaide Gordon, Ben Doak, James McConnell, Lewis Koumas, and Tom Hill all have a chance of featuring tomorrow night after travelling with the squad.
