Besiktas have released a statement surrounding Wout Weghorst’s reported loan switch to Manchester United – labelling it as fake news.
The Dutch striker has been linked with a shock move to Old Trafford in the past week, with a deal claimed to be close.
Weghorst – on loan at Besiktas from Burnley – is keen on joining Erik ten Hag’s side should the opportunity presents itself, talkSPORT understands.
The Turkish outfit have now revealed their stance on the situation, with rumours continuing to circulate over the 30-year-old’s future.
In a statement, they said: “After the match of our Football A Team against Kasımpaşa in the Super League, there was a need to make a statement due to speculative news in the media about our football player Wout Weghorst.
“The claim that there is an exit clause in our football player’s contract, stating that his contract can be terminated with a compensation of 2.5million Euros [£2.2m] in case of an offer from the Premier League, is fictitious.
“However, the news that the player in question will leave the team on Tuesday is completely untrue.
“The initiative regarding Wout Weghorst belongs entirely to Besiktas Gymnastics Club.
“We also state that if there is a development on this issue, our esteemed community and the public will be informed.”
Weghorst appeared to bid farewell to Besiktas fans over the weekend – much to the confusion of their sporting director Ceyhun Kazanci.
He remarked: “I don’t understand why Weghorst said goodbye to the fans, why he made such a move.
“He is our football player right now. Our contract expires at the end of the season.
“If Manchester United or any other team wants Weghorst, they will meet with Burnley anyway.
“Burnley will then contact us and discuss the terms of separation. If we accept, the contract will be terminated.
“Otherwise, it will go on until the end of the season. He can’t just go. There will have to be a reward for us to approve the separation.
“I’ll give an example. Burnley told us, ‘We made a deal with this team for Weghorst. We give you half of the transfer fee.’ This may be a different condition. Then we’ll sit down and talk.”
It remains to be seen Weghorst will end up at the Theatre of Dreams, but Besiktas are determined to keep hold of the ex-Wolfsburg star until the summer.
He is the club’s top scorer this campaign having banged in eight goals in 16 Super Lig matches.
