Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United are “back in the race” for a spot in next season’s Champions League following their win at Luton Town.

United were 2-1 winners at Kenilworth Road to help close the gap to Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in England’s top flight.

Rasmus Hojlund’s first-half brace was the difference between the two sides, and the win ensures United are just three points behind fifth-place Spurs and five off Villa, who are fourth.

Ten Hag said to Sky Sports: “I think we are back in the race and we are building momentum. We need to build pressure. Every game is a final to get closer to them.”

United, meanwhile, are on the cusp of change, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS set to complete a minority stake in the club imminently.

INEOS’ deal for a 25 per cent stake in United – which gives them control of sporting operations – has received approval from both the Premier League and Football Association.

Ratcliffe and INEOS have already begun making moves following the appointment of Omar Berrada as CEO. They have also made an approach to Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth to become their sporting director.

“I have very good contacts (with INEOS),” Ten Hag added. “I know what’s going on. For Manchester United, it is very good. It’s highly ambitious.

“They are good people coming in. We are the project and they can help and support us to accelerate this project.”
