Tuchel mystified at Bayern Munich players after defeat to Werder Bremen: ‘We didn’t look like a team who wanted to win the title’

Thomas Tuchel could not explain why his Bayern Munich players failed to replicate the performances they demonstrated in training as they slumped to a 1-0 home defeat against Werder Bremen.

Mitchell Weiser’s second-half goal was the difference between the two teams, with the result meaning that Bayern are now seven points adrift of leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race.

Bayern had organised a training camp in Faro, Portugal, last week, in preparation for the second half of the season but Tuchel argued that his side lacked motivation for the majority of the game on Sunday.

He said: “For the first 70 minutes, we didn’t look like a team who wanted to win and play for the title.

“The win was very deserved for Werder. We conceded too many counter-attacks, lost too many duels, lost our structure.

“There was little positive energy today. We were sloppy and static. It’s not enough. I can’t explain why so many players fell short of the levels they showed in training.”

The result marked Werder’s first triumph in Munich since 2008 and the second league defeat for Tuchel’s team this season.

Bayern are second in the Bundesliga on 41 points but have a game in hand over Leverkusen, who are leading the table on 48 points.
