Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Marco Reus will leave the club at the end of the season.

The Bundesliga side said in a statement it has been mutually agreed that the 34-year-old’s contract, which expires in June, will not be renewed.

His departure will conclude a 12-year spell at Dortmund, who he rejoined from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012.

Reus said: “I am incredibly grateful and proud for this special time at my club Borussia Dortmund. I spent more than half of my life in this club and enjoyed every day, although there were of course difficult moments.

“I already know that it will be difficult for me to say goodbye at the end of the season. And yet I’m glad that there’s clarity now and we can concentrate fully on the important final games that are still outstanding. We have a big goal in mind and we all want to achieve it together. For this we need each and every one of our incredible fans, whom I would like to expressly thank for their incredible support over the years.”

Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke added: “Marco Reus is one of the greatest players at this club. He was born in Dortmund, played in our youth team for almost ten years, was with the professionals for twelve years and was the captain of our team for a long time.

“His connection to Borussia Dortmund is extraordinary. We wish Marco all the best for his future. We very much hope that he will return to BVB after his professional career, because there are plenty of exciting tasks waiting for him here in Dortmund.”

Reus began his career at Dortmund’s academy but left in 2006, joining Rot Weiss Ahlen.

He then played for Monchengladbach between 2009 and 2012 before returning to Dortmund, where he has played 424 matches, scoring 168 goals and assisting on 128 occasions.

During his time at Dortmund, Reus has won two DFB-Pokals, two German Supercups and played an integral role in his side reaching the Champions League final in 2013. He was also named footballer of the year in Germany in 2012 and 2019.

Reus has also been capped on 48 occasions for Germany.

Dortmund are next in action this Saturday at home to Augsburg before taking on Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday. The German side beat PSG 1-0 in the first leg.
