Ian Maatsen, who joined Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea earlier this month, has a £35millon (€40.6m/$44.5m) release clause in his new contract that can be triggered from the summer of 2024.

The 21-year-old left-back extended his Chelsea contract until 2026 before joining the German club on loan for the remainder of the season. His previous deal had been due to expire in 2025.

The Dutchman made his debut for Dortmund last weekend, starting in Dortmund’s 3-0 victory over Darmstadt and playing the entirety of the match at the Merck-Stadion am Bollenfalltor.

The game also saw on-loan Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho make his second debut for Dortmund, going on to provide an assist for Marco Reus.

Maatsen, who joined Chelsea in the summer of 2018, aged 16, made 15 appearances for the London club this season but only made one Premier League start for Mauricio Pochettino’s side — in December’s 2-1 victory at home to Crystal Palace in which he was withdrawn shortly before the hour mark.

He struggled for regular first-team minutes despite injuries to fellow left-backs Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella.

Chelsea are next in action in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough on January 23.
