Bayern Munich drop further points in Bundesliga title race after draw with Freiburg

Bayern Munich were held to a 2-2 draw by Freiburg on Friday evening as Thomas Tuchel’s side dropped further points in the Bundesliga title race.

Bayern had come from 1-0 down to lead 2-1 with 15 minutes remaining at the Europa-Park Stadion before Freiburg scored an 87th-minute equaliser.

The result leaves Bayern seven points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who can extend that gap to 10 points with victory over Koln on Sunday.

Freiburg took an early lead through Christian Gunter’s low half-volley from range, before Mathys Tel marked his first Bundesliga start of the season with a goal from the edge of the area to level the scores before the break.

Jamal Musiala put Bayern in front on 75 minutes with a piece of individual brilliance, skipping past three Freiburg defenders, cutting inside and finding the bottom corner.

Lucas Holer equalised with three minutes of normal time remaining, sending a sweetly-struck left-footed volley past Manuel Neuer.

The result leaves Bayern with just one win from their last five outings in all competitions.

Tuchel, who announced in February he would be leaving the club at the end of the season, was only able to name seven substitutes for Friday evening’s game, with Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, Sacha Boey and Noussair Mazraoui injured, and Matthijs de Ligt suspended. Alphonso Davies did return to the bench and was introduced as a second-half substitute after missing his side’s last three with a ligament strain.

Bayern return to action against Lazio in the Champions League last-16 on Tuesday, where they will attempt to overcome a 1-0 first leg deficit.

Sallai: ‘We don’t have big stars… this was the face of SC Freiburg’

Freiburg captain Roland Sallai praised his side’s togetherness against Bayern as they staged another late comeback.

Holer’s strike was the third time in Freiburg’s last four outings that they have scored after the 85th-minute, following February’s extra-time comeback win against Lens in the Europa League and a 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.

“Maybe this is our way to be successful, we were compact and that’s why we could take one point,” Sallai told Sky Sports.

“To work together as a team (was key), not to play alone. We don’t have big stars, we have to always be together. This is what we showed today, this was the face of SC Freiburg.”
