Gary Neville appears to have started a new job back at old club Manchester United, days after Sir Alex Ferguson received the axe.

Earlier this week it was reported that Ferguson, United‘s most successful manager, was having his ties cut after spending more than a decade in a role.

Since he retired in 2013, Ferguson continued to be involved at Old Trafford as a director and global ambassador.

He was paid £2.16 million per year for his duties but news emerged that INEOS chief and United shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe told Ferguson the arrangement was being ended in a face-to-face meeting.

The decision, which has split opinion amongst fans and media, was taken as a cost-cutting measure and means Ferguson will not earn a salary after this season.

Although he will still be a non-executive director, a separate report claims Ferguson is not allowed to enter the United dressing room.

Asked about the news on Friday, manager Erik ten Hag said, “Of course it has an impact on us, Sir Alex is Man United,”

But while Ferguson’s ambassadorial role is gone, his former skipper Neville was working in a similar capacity this weekend.

According to The Sun, Neville is working as a freelance ambassador for the club he represented 602 times after coming through the ranks.

Though he has his hands full with Sky Sports and NBC broadcast commitments, as well as owning multiple business including Salford City, Neville was in India this weekend.

He was at the Minerva academy in Mohali for the Apollo Tyres flagship grassroots football programme and was wearing an official United polo.

Neville, who is also on United’s stadium taskforce, was back to commentate on Liverpool vs Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Ferguson was not present at Old Trafford for the win against Brentford, instead watching his old side Aberdeen against Celtic.
