Jonas Eidevall has left his role as head coach of Arsenal Women.
The Athletic reported Eidevall was to leave earlier on Tuesday morning and an Arsenal statement later confirmed he had resigned from his position. He last signed a three-year contract with the club in October 2023.
Assistant coach Renee Slegers will take charge of the team on an interim basis.
Arsenal have won just two of their last seven matches across all competitions and have picked up just five points from their opening four matches in the Women’s Super League (WSL). That run included a 5-2 Champions League loss at Bayern Munich last week.
“We thank Jonas for his commitment to the club and achievements here since joining us in 2021,” sporting director Edu said.
“We have great respect for the dedication and commitment he showed to our women’s first team and recognise the role he has played in the growth and development of Arsenal Women. We all wish him the very best for the future.
“Our focus will now turn to the process of appointing a new head coach, and in the meantime, supporting Renée, as she takes interim charge of the team starting with two important fixtures this week.”
Eidevall’s final game was the 2-1 home defeat by Chelsea on Saturday, where his side were booed by the Emirates Stadium crowd after going two goals down in the 16th minute.
Eidevall took charge of Arsenal in 2021, replacing Joe Montemurro. The 41-year-old won the League Cup in 2023 and 2024 but was unable to dislodge Chelsea as the top team in England, with the west London side winning the title in each of his three seasons in charge.
Arsenal have finished third in the last two WSL campaigns, after finishing second in Eidevall’s first season at the helm, and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2022-23.
Eidevall had previously spent over a decade coaching in his native Sweden, including two seasons in charge at men’s club Lunds BK and two spells in charge of FC Rosengard.
He guided Rosengard to three league titles and the Swedish Cup trophy in 2018, while he also had a stint as assistant manager to Henrik Larsson at men’s side Helsingborgs IF.
Arsenal are next in action at home to Norwegian side Valerenga in the Champions League on Wednesday before returning to WSL action with a trip to West Ham United on Sunday.
