Daniele de Rossi has been sacked as Roma head coach after eight months in charge.
The ex-Italy midfielder, who made 616 appearances for the club as a player, was sacked on Wednesday morning.
In a statement announcing his exit, Roma thanked De Rossi for his “passion and dedication”, adding the decision had been taken in “the interest of the team”.
Roma have made a winless start to the new Serie A season, drawing three games and suffering one defeat against Empoli.
De Rossi leaves after Roma were held to a 1-1 draw at Genoa on Sunday thanks to Koni De Winter’s stoppage-time equaliser. De Rossi was shown a red card for his reaction to the goal.
The 41-year-old was initially appointed on an interim basis following Jose Mourinho’s sacking in January.
In June, he was given a three-year contract after turning Roma’s season around by securing a sixth-place finish in Serie A and leading the club to the semi-finals of the Europa League.
Before his stint with Roma, De Rossi began his managerial career at Serie B side SPAL. He was sacked after 17 games at the helm and replaced his former Italy team-mate Massimo Oddo.
De Rossi made 117 appearances for Italy and was part of the squad that won the World Cup in 2006, where he served a four-game suspension for elbowing United States striker, Brian McBride.
