Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins have withdrawn from the England squad for their upcoming Nations League fixtures.

The FA said in a statement that Chelsea forward Palmer and Aston Villa striker Watkins have “returned to their clubs to continue rehabilitation for ongoing issues” following assessments made at St George’s Park.

Foden, meanwhile, did not report to action because of illness and has subsequently been ruled out of England’s games against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on September 7 and Finland at Wembley Stadium on September 10.

The Manchester City midfielder, 24, has only played 45 minutes this season, as a substitute for during his side’s victory over Chelsea on the opening weekend of the Premier League campaign on August 18. He then missed the wins over Ipswich Town last month and West Ham United on Saturday.

When asked about the possibility of Foden being part of the squad, City manager Pep Guardiola said: “I don’t think so right now. I think he will not go but I don’t know.

“He doesn’t feel well. But national teams, they decide.”

Palmer, 22, has played in all of Chelsea’s league fixtures this season, while Watkins, 28, has also featured in Villa’s opening three league matches despite missing his club’s pre-season. Both players scored for England at the European Championship earlier this summer.

Foden has 41 caps for his country, while Palmer has nine and Watkins has 15.

Lee Carsley has been placed in temporary charge of England following Gareth Southgate’s decision to step down after the tournament.
