Atalanta striker Gianluca Scamacca has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee.
The 25-year-old sustained the injury during a friendly against Parma on Sunday and was substituted after 50 minutes.
Scamacca is expected to be absent for an extended period with Atalanta confirming that the Italy international will have surgery on Monday. They have not yet put a timeframe on his return.
Former Sassuolo and Roma striker Scamacca joined Atalanta from West Ham United in the summer of 2023.
He had an impressive first season back in Serie A, scoring 19 goals and providing eight assists in 44 games to help Atalanta finish fourth in Serie A and win the Europa League.
He also appeared in all four of Italy’s Euro 2024 games earlier this summer, helping his nation reach the round of 16.
Atalanta, who qualified for the Champions League after finishing fourth in Serie A last season, face reigning champions Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup in Poland on Wednesday, August 14. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side then get their league campaign underway five days later against Lecce.
