Reminder: How the format works

In a continuation of last season’s format, instead of the previous round-of-32 knockout stage feeding into the last 16, the competition now features a play-off round — consisting of the runner-up from each Europa League group taking on the sides that finished third in their Champions League groups.

The victors advance to the last 16 to join the Europa League group-stage winners.

That means that English trio Liverpool, Brighton and West Ham, alongside Scottish side Rangers, have already progressed and will not be participating in the play-off round.

Roma will play Feyenoord in the play-off round for the Europa League knockout stages while AC Milan have been paired with Rennes.

Roma were beaten finalists in last season’s Europa League against Sevilla with their draw against Feyenoord a repeat of the 2022 Conference League final, which Jose Mourinho’s side won 1-0.

Elsewhere, Lisbon giants Benfica and Sporting Lisbon have been paired against Toulouse and Young Boys respectively.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s clash against Marseille will be one of the ties of the round, while Lens play Freiburg, Galatasaray have been paired with Sparta Prague and Braga will play Qarabag.
