The Spanish Football Association (RFEF) is investigating an alleged offensive remark by Jude Bellingham to Mason Greenwood after being passed the case by La Liga.
The RFEF Competition Committee are investigating the alleged comment during the match in La Liga between Getafe and Real Madrid on February 1.
Videos of the alleged incident — which took place after a Bellingham challenge on Greenwood — from the TV broadcast of the match were widely circulated on social media.
La Liga subsequently hired an expert lip reader to investigate the incident after confirming a complaint from Getafe.
That report was last week passed on to the RFEF Competition Committee, who are responsible for administering suspensions in Spanish football.
For all incidences, an investigating judge is appointed to collect all the relevant information and will then make a ruling on the outcome within a few weeks.
The relevant club will then be given a timeframe of 10 business days to appeal the decision.
The Spanish FA’s regulations state: “To insult, offend, threaten or provoke, as long as it does not constitute a more serious offence, will be punished with a suspension of one to three games or for a period of up to one month.”
Getafe sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationship, insisted after the incident Greenwood did not want the matter to escalate.
Madrid declined to comment when approached by The Athletic.
Greenwood joined Getafe side on a season-long loan deal from Manchester United on the final day of the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old was made available for transfer after United confirmed on August 21 that they would not bring the forward back into the first-team squad, after The Athletic had revealed details of plans to reintegrate him and then the subsequent U-turn.
He had been subject to an internal investigation from United since February when the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) discontinued its case against him for attempted rape, assault, and coercive control. He denied all the alleged offences.
