USMNT striker Daryl Dike suffers injury after return from nine-month absence

USMNT striker Daryl Dike has suffered another injury setback, having only recently recovered from a nine-month absence.

Dike, 23, suffered the injury in the 65th minute of West Bromwich Albion’s clash against Ipswich Town in the Championship — just 10 minutes after he was introduced as a substitute at Portman Road.

The former Orlando City striker hobbled off the pitch with the assistance of two physios before requiring a stretcher buggy to carry him off the playing area, as Dike sat with his head in his hands.

Dike only recently returned to fitness after rupturing his right Achilles in April 2023 for West Brom.

West Brom head coach Carlos Corberan said on Saturday that it may be a similar injury to Dike’s previous Achilles injury, but this time the injury is on the striker’s left side.

“It’s too early to know how bad the injury is,” Corberan said after the match. “We don’t know if it will be the same type of injury or less.

“Everyone is affected when you see someone suffer an injury. We are all going to wait for the results to see the damage.

“We will be with him, but we need to be patient. He had a similar feeling as the previous injury.”

Dike’s previous Achilles injury sidelined him for nine months, with Saturday’s match just his fourth league appearance as the season — all as a substitute.

The striker did start West Brom’s FA Cup win over Aldershot Town last month, but was substituted off at half-time.

Dike missed the World Cup in Qatar for the U.S. after an injury-plagued 2022, but was recalled to the U.S. squad in March 2023.

He came off the bench in a 7-1 CONCACAF Nations League win over Grenada, before starting a subsequent 1-0 victory over El Salvador.

Dike joined West Brom from Orlando City in January 2022 following a loan spell with Barnsley.

He scored seven goals in 23 Championship appearances last season and has netted three times in 10 senior caps for the U.S.
